Nail fungus can be an embarrassing condition to have, especially if you are at the beach or in another setting where you walk bare feat. A nail fungal infection has usually just started when you see yellow or white spots under the nail tip. If you don’t have it treated it can spread deeper, and can cause the nail to thicken, change colors, and develop edges that are crumbly. This condition can be difficult to treat, and can sometimes lead to chronic or recurring fungus.

Fungus loves warm environment, and commonly spread in swimming pools and showers. They are actually microscopic organisms, and are spread through small cuts and separations between the nail and the nail bed. For nail fungus to be a problem, you must continuously be exposed to the areas where fungus is present, and the symptoms of an infection are commonly that the nail becomes dark, no shine, distortion, thickened, and dull color. Dethatched nails might also be a symptom of an infection.

If you suspect that you have this condition, contact your doctor for cures for nail fungus. He or she might prescribe an oral antifungal medicine to help you treat the infection. These include Sporanox and Lamisil. To completely get rid of nail fungus you might need treatment for up to four months.

There are some alternative cures that you can try. Homeopathic remedies include tea tree oil treatments, where you clean the infected feet with a cotton swab a couple of times a day. You can also try an over the counter antifungal cream, which might help you get rid of the fungus. However, this treatment is generally not very effective compared to prescribed medicine, especially if athletes foot is present.
