If you’re looking at salaries in investment banking firms as the primary criterion to help you decide whether that career is right for you, you may need to think again. While it definitely makes sense to choose a career where the salary level can sustain you, it’s not smart to ignore other aspects of the job, such as what the lifestyle will be like while you are there. Investment banking firms are known for putting people through the wringer with long hours and stressful projects. During my internships, other employees admitted sleeping under their desks rather than taking the long commute home to New Jersey.
So, do look at investment banking salaries and do allow them to motivate you, but don’t lose site of the big picture.
